India will begin day two on 255 for five with Ajinkya Rahane (43, 105b, 7×4) and skipper MS Dhoni (17, 46b, 3×4) batting. The visitors, not given much chance in the two-match series against the best bowling lineup in the world, batted brilliantly well, with Virat Kohli smashing a wonderful 119 (181b, 18×4).
Kohli was well aided by Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahane, who looked quite good in the middle in only his second Test match.
South Africa, so potent at their best, were frustrated for much of day one by the patient Indian batsmen, with the likes of Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander cutting rather frustrated figures.
But then, because the bowlers at least kept the run rate in check, India haven’t run away with it on day one, and if the Proteas can pick up a couple of early wickets at the beginning of day two, then they will be right back in the game.
India’s target will be to bat for as long as possible, with much of that onus falling on the two batsmen in the middle – Rahane and Dhoni.
The Proteas, on the other hand, will be keen to keep India under 300, with a score over that mark likely to be an important one come the end of the Test match.
The wicket did not look like it had too many demons in them, and if the Indian batsmen can apply themselves for the first session of day two like they did so wonderfully well on the opening day, then that could set up a big score – unthinkable at the beginning of the Test match.
